Production Designer
Production Designer
Location: West Sacramento, CA
Employment Type: Full-Time
Salary: $55,000-$65,000 depending on experience
Job Summary
Sign Technology is hiring an experienced production designer for our West Sacramento shop. This is not an office-building design job. You will work in an open office atmosphere inside a working production facility, turning client concepts into files and drawings that our fabricators, printers, CNC operators, and installers can build.
We design and build monument signs, wayfinding and directories, ADA and Grade 2 Braille signs, leasing-office and sales-center graphics, interior murals and window graphics, vehicle and boat graphics, banners, custom displays, and architectural signage. Most work is for apartment communities, home builders, developers, and commercial properties. Projects run from design through in-house fabrication and installation. We do not subcontract the work.
We need someone with at least 3-5 years of sign-shop or production-graphics experience who can design cleanly, prep files correctly the first time, and work alongside the people who cut, print, paint, and install the job.
Responsibilities
- Design signage, graphics, and displays that match the property's identity and can be built in our shop.
- Prepare production-ready files for large-format latex and UV printing, vinyl cutting, CNC routing, and related fabrication.
- Produce layouts, scaled drawings, and proofs for sales, clients, and the production floor.
- Revise designs from client and sales feedback and keep versions organized so the shop builds the right file.
- Apply practical knowledge of materials, finishes, mounting, and sightlines so designs hold up outdoors and read clearly on site.
- Support multifamily and new-home programs, including monument signs, directories, wayfinding, ADA/Braille, model-home and sales-office graphics, and interior graphics.
- Coordinate with fabricators, machine operators, and installers on sizes, colors, substrates, and build constraints before a job hits the floor.
- Help with color matching, print proofs, and file checks so output matches the approved design.
- Meet deadlines tied to construction, leasing, and installation schedules, including occasional weekend program work.
Skills and Experience
Required
- Minimum 3-5 years designing in a sign shop, large-format graphics shop, or similar production environment.
- Strong Adobe Illustrator. Working knowledge of Photoshop. CorelDRAW experience is a STRONG plus and often expected in this trade.
- Proven ability to build print-ready and cut-ready files for large-format printers, vinyl plotters, and CNC.
- Understanding of substrates, vinyl, laminate, paint, and outdoor durability.
- Ability to read and produce scaled drawings and to catch production errors before they reach the floor.
- Clear communication with sales, clients, and shop staff. You must be able to explain why a design will or will not fabricate cleanly.
- Comfort working in a fast production atmosphere with changing priorities.
Preferred
- ADA and Grade 2 Braille signage.
- Multifamily, home-builder, or master-planned community sign programs.
- Monument, post-and-panel, dimensional, and wayfinding work.
- Vehicle graphics and window or wall graphics.
- Familiarity with latex and UV flatbed output, CNC routers, and vinyl cutters.
Working Conditions
This role is based in our production facility at 1700 Enterprise Blvd., Suite F, West Sacramento, not a quiet office. Expect shop noise, equipment, dust, paint, and people moving materials. You will spend time at a workstation and also on the floor checking proofs, confirming sizes, and talking with the crew building the job.
Hours are generally standard business days, with flexibility when install or weekend directional work requires it. Standing, walking the shop, and handling drawings and sample materials are part of the day. Safety rules on the production floor apply to everyone, including design.
